SKIM800 insulation monitoring device with IEX3000 couplers for deepwater robot
The ocean is the largest treasure trove left by the Earth for humanity, and also one of the most mysterious areas. If humans want to engage in scientific exploration, resource collection, cable laying, and other activities on the seabed, they need to use deepwater robots to complete them. Deepwater robots are equipped with many instruments and equipment, with complex internal power grids and large distributed capacitors. The internal power grid system includes low-voltage frequency converters, step-up transformers, as well as motors and working electrical components of different powers and voltages. As the entire power grid system of deepwater robots is an ungrounded medium voltage power grid system, real-time monitoring of the insulation performance of the deepwater robot power grid to the ground has become a necessary electrical safety protection. When there is a deviation in the insulation resistance value of the power grid, the insulation monitoring equipment will give a warning. Moreover, in complex power grids, preventing false alarms, missed alarms, and downtime of insulation monitoring device is also an important reference indicator for testing the performance of insulation monitoring device. This article provides practical solutions for customers through the actual use of SKIM800 combined with coupler IEX3000 series in two different deepwater robots.



Solution for Ground Insulation Monitoring of Submarine Cable Laying Robots
The submarine cable laying robot has a low-voltage power grid structure that is converted into two medium voltage ungrounded IT power grid systems through isolated step-up transformers, with one 3300V AC power grid supplying the load transformer output. The other is the 2200V power grid supplying load transformation output. Due to the uncomplicated structure of the two power grid systems, the cables are relatively short. The solution designed by Sikcon for this system is to use SKIM800 insulation monitoring instrument combined with IEX3000-640 resistance coupler to achieve stable monitoring of medium voltage circuit system.
After the above power grid system is converted into two medium voltage ungrounded IT power grid systems, each system needs to be equipped with one SKIM800 and one IEX3000-640 coupler. SKIM800 is an insulation monitoring instrument designed with low-frequency pulse square wave injection, which has stable performance and is suitable for use in AC, DC, and mixed AC/DC IT power grids. IEX3000-640 is a resistive coupler suitable for use in medium voltage systems of 10kV and below, and operates stably under frequency converter conditions.


Solution for Ground Insulation Monitoring of Underwater Mining Robots
The power grid structure in the underwater mining robot is powered by a low-voltage inverter to the step-up transformer, which converts the voltage into three ungrounded IT power grid systems, and two 6600V AC power grids supply the load transformer output. The other is the 3300V power grid supplying load transformation output. The working cable of this robot is relatively long and the leakage capacitance is large, which is not suitable for the operation of IEX3000 resistance type couplers. Therefore, Sikcon's designed solution is to use SKIM800 insulation monitoring device combined with IEX3000-7200L inductive coupler to achieve accurate monitoring of the medium voltage power grid system of the step-up transformer.
We have configured 3 sets of SKIM800 and 3 sets of  IEX3000-7200L low-voltage frequency converters with step-up transformers for the power grid mentioned above, with each circuit equipped with a set of equipment. This case has verified the stable working performance of Sikcon company's equipment under the working conditions of large distributed leakage capacitors and long cables.
